As the holidays approach, we anticipate an influx of community members looking to volunteer their time. While we appreciate- more than can be expressed- each and every volunteer regardless of the timing, we like to remind folks that the need for volunteers is real and necessary all year round. Senior Services of Southwest Michigan has a real and immediate need, especially at our Battle Creek site, for meal delivery drivers. Don’t wait until the holidays to give back, sign up to volunteer today!
Don’t just take it from us- read a little about why giving back to Senior Services is important to Gayla & Alan Cope.
Story excerpt by Bill Krasean, Senior Services RSVP Advisory Council Volunteer.
Gayla and Alan have been together for 51 years, raising two daughters, caring for their elderly parents and taking care of a number of special needs children. And now that they are both retired, they still share a lot of their time together. Once each week they deliver food to the elderly through Senior Services of Southwest Michigan’s Meals on Wheels program. Other days they fill in as needed as a driver or “hopper” – the one who takes the meals to clients with a friendly smile and hello. “Both of us came from a background of caring for others,” Alan said. “We simply get fulfillment from helping others. We’ve always tried to reach out and help.” Gayla loves to hop. “For me I like making people happy and making relationships,” she said. “I make it my job to smile and get them to smile. One lady I see doesn’t often smile. I will start talking and suddenly, she gets a big smile, and then it fades. So, I know I reached her for at least a moment. Many of them have stories and I am a good listener. If they want to talk, I stay and listen.”
We are thankful for community members like Gayla and Alan. Without them, we cannot serve our mission of helping people thrive. Join them, and us, in helping to fulfill our mission today.
