May is Mental Health Awareness Month. You might not know this, but Senior Services has three programs that offer mental health services to individuals in Kalamazoo County. Our Behavioral Health Supports Coordination program provides home and community-based mental health case management services to individuals age 55 and older who are referred to us by Integrated Services of Kalamazoo. Our OBRA program provides mental health assessment services to all individuals with severe mental illness diagnoses who are being admitted to or are currently residing in a nursing home. The OBRA program ensures that nursing home residents have access to the mental health services they need while residing there. Our Nursing Facility Monitoring program provides mental health case management services to individuals of any age who are residing in one of the 10 nursing homes in Kalamazoo County. The Covid-19 pandemic hit nursing homes especially hard, and, for safety reasons, our OBRA and NFM staff had the extra challenge of not being allowed to visit nursing homes from March 2020 until just recently. But this did not stop our staff. All our mental health program staff — essentially overnight — reinvented the way services were provided and quickly adjusted to a new world of telehealth methods. Here at Senior Services, we have an amazing team of mental health professionals who by nature are very caring, compassionate, adaptable, and hardworking. They have been a lifeline of support for the many to whom they provide services during what was undeniably the most stressful year for everyone. Overall, all the staff of our Mental Health Services programs are continuing to do their part to make huge impacts in the lives of the people they serve as well as in the business health of our mental health programs. You also can do your part to make a difference for those we serve simply by breaking the stigma against mental illness whenever possible. There is no health without mental health.
